A faraway planet where sunset doesn't match sunrise
Professor Pip adjusted his slightly crooked spectacles and pulled out his small brass telescope from one of the bulging pockets of his green lab coat. Then he fished out a red balloon, a small flashlight, and a tiny battery-powered fan.
"Ah!" he said, tail swishing behind him. "Just what I need for tonight."
The hilltop was quiet. The sun was sinking low over the trees, painting the sky peach and lavender. Mia and Leo sat cross-legged in the grass beside him.
"Tonight," Professor Pip announced, "we're going to think about a planet so far away that light from its star takes 850 years to reach us. And the strangest thing about it is — its mornings and evenings don't match!"
"Don't match?" said Mia, frowning.
"What does that mean?" asked Leo.
Pip held up the balloon. "Let's say this is a planet. Now, this planet barely spins. One side faces its star all the time" — he shone the flashlight on one half — "and the other side stays in shadow forever."
He let the children stare at the half-bright, half-dark balloon for a long moment.
"But!" Pip went on, lifting the little fan. "On this planet, hot air doesn't just sit still. Wild winds whoosh it from the bright side toward the dark side—" He clicked on the fan. WHIRRRR! "—and they carry the heat with them. By the time that heat curls around to the evening side, that side is sizzling. The morning side, where cooler air is just arriving, is much calmer."
"So the sunset would be a different color than the sunrise!" Leo gasped.
"Precisely!" Pip beamed. "The morning side might glow softly. The evening side might burn bright. That whole pattern of air moving heat around a planet is called atmospheric circulation."
Mia tilted her head. "Like… when the bathwater is hot on one end and cool on the other if the warm tap is only on one side?"
"Exactly right!" Pip clapped his paws.
"This planet is called WASP-121b," he said softly, looking up at the deepening sky. "Our giant Webb telescope just measured it this week. Real scientists figured out its sunset is hotter than its sunrise. Imagine — a sunset no human will ever see, on a world we'll never visit, and we know what color it glows."
Pip handed each child a small balloon. "Now you try. Shine a light on one side and gently blow across it. Where does the warm air want to go?"
Leo grinned. "To the other side!"
"Curiouser and curiouser," Pip whispered, eyes on the fading sky.
