In the rainforests of northern Australia, scientists have just described a brand-new kind of spider that hunts using a built-in catapult. It builds a tall silk cone — about 60 stretched threads, woven over four hours — and waits. When an ant attacks the silk, the cone snaps loose and FLINGS the ant upward at over 4,200 feet per second, straight into the spider's waiting web. Researchers nicknamed it the "ballista spider," after a giant ancient Roman weapon that worked the same way.

Professor Pip patted his coat pockets. "I know I had a slingshot in here somewhere…" Out came a tiny wooden Y-shape with a rubber band stretched between the prongs, then a small pebble, then his pocket notebook labeled Notes.

"Today, my fellow scientists, we shall learn about catapults."

Mia, Leo, and their friend Theo sat cross-legged in a sunny rainforest clearing. Bright ferns waved around them.

"Catapults are cool," said Theo.

"They are also everywhere," said Pip, holding up the little slingshot. "Watch closely." He fitted the pebble against the rubber band and pulled back, back, back — until the band trembled and stretched thin.

"It looks like it's about to burst," Mia whispered.

"Aha!" said Pip. "What's inside the band right now? Not air. Not water. Something invisible called stored energy. When you pull, you put energy in. The band remembers."

"Then what?" asked Leo.

Pip let go. SNAP! The pebble zinged off into a fern and rustled the leaves. The kids cheered.

"Now," said Pip, eyes twinkling, "imagine a spider doing the same trick — except the rubber band is made of silk, and the pebble is an ant."

"WHAT?!" yelled Theo, falling backward in delight.

"Just last week," said Pip, flipping open his notebook, "scientists in Australia found a tiny new spider — smaller than your fingernail. It spends four whole hours spinning 60 silk threads into a tall cone. Then it climbs up and waits. When a feisty green tree ant comes along and bites the silk to attack it — snap! — the cone springs loose and flings the ant up into the spider's waiting web. Whoosh. Dinner served."

"But ants are strong," Mia frowned. "Why doesn't it just bite the spider?"

"Precisely why the trick is brilliant," said Pip. "Green tree ants travel in armies. If the spider tried to grab one on the ground, hundreds more would swarm in. So instead — catapult. The spider stays safe up top while the ant flies in like a tiny grumpy passenger."

Leo grinned. "Oh! It's like a mousetrap, but flippy."

"Exactly right!" Pip clapped his paws. "Pull. Wait. Release. The same idea Romans used to fling stones over castle walls — and a spider invented millions of years ago in a forest."

He looked into the trees. "Most clever ideas weren't invented by us, you know. We just notice them later."

He handed each child a rubber band. "Now — pull gently. Feel the energy waking up."
