Peeking Inside a Cosmic Treasure Chest Full of Baby Stars

This week the James Webb Space Telescope released its August Picture of the Month — a stunning new infrared view inside a dusty pocket of the Carina Nebula that astronomers call the Treasure Chest. Hidden inside, Webb spotted swirling planet-forming disks around baby stars — and discovered that the powerful ultraviolet light from a nearby giant star, Eta Carinae, is slowly blasting those disks apart before planets can finish forming.

A Story from Professor Pip's Science Discovery

The hilltop was cool and dark. Professor Pip patted his lab coat pockets, pulled out his small brass telescope, and pointed it straight up.

"Fellow scientists," he whispered, "tonight we're going to visit a nursery. But not just any nursery. A star nursery."

"A star nursery?!" gasped Asha from her blanket.

"Precisely! Seven thousand five hundred light-years from here, in a cloud called the Carina Nebula, brand-new stars are being born right now." Pip's spectacles slipped down his nose. "And the James Webb Space Telescope just took a peek inside a special dusty corner of it called the Treasure Chest."

Leo squinted at the sky. "Why is it called a treasure chest?"

Pip beamed. "Because it's stuffed full of glittering baby stars! Here — imagine like this." He pulled a small paper bag from his pocket, tipped in a spoonful of flour, then dropped in five tiny marbles. He shook the bag gently. WHOOSH. The flour swirled around each marble in a soft flat spinning cloud.

"That flour whirling around each marble? That's what scientists call a planet-forming disk. Every baby star is born with one — a big flat ring of dust and gas spinning around it. Over millions of years, the dust clumps together into pebbles, then boulders, then… planets."

"So Earth used to be a swirl of dust like that?" Mia asked, eyes huge.

"Every planet was! Including ours." Pip nodded. "But here's what Webb just discovered. The Treasure Chest sits right next to a MASSIVE, angry, extra-bright star called Eta Carinae. It's like a giant lighthouse blasting invisible ultraviolet light in every direction."

He held his paw over the paper bag and blew, HARD. The flour swirled away.

"Oh no!" Leo cried. "It blew the little disks apart!"

"That's what Eta Carinae is doing to the baby stars' disks. Blasting them away before all the planets have finished forming. Some of those baby stars may never get to grow their planet families." Pip's voice went soft. "It's the same star that carved the Treasure Chest into such a beautiful shape in the first place — building and un-building at the same time."

Everyone was quiet for a moment. Above them, the real stars twinkled.

"So somewhere up there," Asha said slowly, "there are little baby suns trying to make planets before their time runs out?"

"Precisely right, my friend." Pip handed each of them the little brass telescope, one at a time. "Now — pick a star. Any star. And wonder about the planets it might already have made."
