One Little Bone Reveals a Giant Long-Necked Dinosaur

In northeastern Thailand, paleontologists have named a brand-new dinosaur species — Uragasaurus kalasinensis — from a single fossil bone (a vertebra from its back). The gentle giant lived about 150 million years ago, stretched roughly 20 meters long (about the length of a school bus and a half), and had a neck about as long as a cricket pitch.

A Story from Professor Pip's Science Discovery

Professor Pip patted the sandy soil and let out a happy whumf. “Ah! Here we are, my brave paleontologists — a fossil dig in the sun!”

Mia, Leo, and their new friend Asha crouched around a patch of tan rock. In the middle sat one curved fossil bone, about the size of a small backpack.

Asha frowned. “That’s… it? Just one bone?”

“Precisely!” Pip beamed, pulling a soft-bristled brush from his coat pocket. “This week, in a place called Kalasin, in Thailand, real scientists found one single bone just like this one — a vertebra from a dinosaur’s back — and used it to name a brand-new creature. They call him Uragasaurus kalasinensis.”

Leo scratched his head. “But how do you know a whole dinosaur from one bone?”

Pip’s tail swished with delight. “Ah, this is the fun part!” He flipped open his little pocket notebook. On the page was a sketch of a huge long-necked dinosaur next to a tiny human figure.

“Every bone has clues,” Pip said, holding a magnifying glass over the fossil. “The shape of this vertebra tells us it belonged to a group called sauropods — the long-necked, house-tall dinosaurs. The little bumps and grooves tell us which sauropod family, and even when it lived. About 150 million years ago!”

Mia gasped. “How big was it?”

“About twenty meters long,” Pip said, his eyes twinkling. “Longer than a school bus and a half. And with a neck almost as long as a cricket pitch.”

“WHAT!” the kids shouted together.

Pip laughed. “Reading a fossil is a little like reading one page of a big storybook. From one page, you can guess what the whole story looks like — as long as you know how storybooks usually go.”

Asha picked up the paintbrush and gently swept a bit of dust off the bone. “Are the rest of the pages still down there?”

“Very likely!” Pip said. “That’s the wonderful part of paleontology — the science of ancient life. Every year, kids and grown-ups pull more pages out of the ground. Sometimes a claw. Sometimes a rib. And each new piece makes the story sharper.”

He looked out across the dig site.

“Now I wonder,” Pip said softly, “what page we’ll turn up next.”

He handed each child a tiny brush. “Your turn, my scientists. See what stories the ground has hidden.”
