📚 A STORY FROM PROFESSOR PIP

Professor Pip balanced on a low stone garden wall, his bushy tail twitching for balance. He patted his bulging pockets — clink, clatter — and pulled out his small brass compass. The needle quivered, then settled, pointing one steady direction.

A plump gray-and-white pigeon perched on the wooden fence post nearby, head tilted, watching him curiously.

"Today," Pip announced, "we are going to figure out how this little fellow…" he nodded at the pigeon, "…can fly all the way from another town and still find his way home!"

"From another town?!" Mia's eyes went wide. "Without a map?"

"Without a map, without a phone, without anything!" laughed Pip, his spectacles slipping down his nose. "So the question is — how?"

He held up the compass flat in his paw. "Look here." The needle quivered as he turned. "See how no matter which way I face, this little needle always swings to point the same way?"

"It's like magic," Leo whispered.

"Better than magic!" said Pip. "It's magnetism. Deep, deep inside our planet, way below the dirt and rocks and oceans, there is a hot spinning ball of iron. That spinning iron creates an invisible field that wraps around the whole Earth, from the top to the bottom — pole to pole. We can't see it. We can't feel it. But this needle can sense it."

He tapped the compass. The needle wobbled and settled again.

"Now here is the curious part," Pip whispered, leaning toward the kids. "Scientists believe pigeons have something like this…" he held the compass higher, "…built right into their bodies. Some scientists think tiny specks of iron inside the pigeon's beak help him feel the field. Others think special proteins in his eyes let him actually see the magnetic field, like faint glowing lines in the air."

"He can SEE it?!" Mia gasped.

"Maybe!" Pip's tail swished excitedly. "We're still figuring that out. That's what makes science so exciting — even right now, scientists are studying birds to solve this mystery."

"Oh!" said Leo suddenly. "It's like when I'm playing hide-and-seek with my eyes closed and I can hear where my brother is. The pigeon just has a different sense than we do!"

"Precisely!" Pip beamed. "You and I have five senses. But animals have all sorts of extra ones — bats hear shapes, sharks taste electricity, and pigeons feel the Earth itself."

He looked up at the pigeon, who fluffed his feathers and flew off into the blue. Pip placed the compass gently in Mia's paw — er, hand. "Take this for the walk home. See if you can tell which way North is, just like our feathered friend."
