A Comet from Another Star Just Whooshed Past Earth
The News
NASA's James Webb Space Telescope just sniffed out a strange chemical smell coming off a comet called 3I/ATLAS — and the "3I" means it's only the third interstellar visitor we've ever spotted, meaning it didn't form around our Sun at all. It came from a different star, somewhere else in the galaxy. Webb found methane and carbon dioxide pouring off the comet, in much weirder amounts than any comet from our own solar system.
Professor Pip stood on the grassy hilltop at twilight, adjusting his crooked spectacles. From one bulging pocket he pulled a small brass telescope; from another, a chunk of ice with bits of dirt frozen inside; and from a third, a magnifying glass and a little flashlight.
"Tonight," he announced, his ringed tail swishing, "we're going to talk about a visitor — a visitor from another star!"
"Another star?!" said Mia, looking up.
"Not another planet?" asked Leo.
A boy named Theo squinted at the sky. "Like an alien?"
"Not an alien," chuckled Pip. "Something better. A comet."
He held up the dirty ice ball. "Here is my pretend comet. Most real comets are like this — a frozen mix of ice, dust, and gases, leftover from when planets first formed. Almost every comet we know comes from the far edges of our own solar family, way out past Pluto." He paused. "But sometimes — just sometimes — a comet comes from somewhere else entirely."
He clicked on the flashlight and aimed it at the ice ball. "Let's pretend my flashlight is the Sun. Watch what happens."
He moved the ice closer to the warm light. Tiny wisps of vapor began to PUFF and STEAM off the surface — the ice was turning straight into gas.
"That's called sublimation," said Pip, tail wiggling. "And that's exactly what happens to real comets when they swing close to the Sun! The Sun's heat boils the ice into glowing gas. That long, beautiful tail comets have? It's gas and dust streaming off as the comet warms up."
"Like steam off a hot cocoa!" Mia said.
"Precisely!" Pip beamed.
He turned his brass telescope toward the deepening sky. "Now — this year, a comet called 3I/ATLAS came whooshing through our neighborhood. The 'I' stands for interstellar. That means it formed around another sun, billions of miles away, drifted across the dark space between stars for who-knows-how-long, and is now just passing through. It's only the third one humans have ever caught."
The children went quiet.
"Scientists pointed the giant James Webb Space Telescope at it. Webb sees in special kinds of light our eyes can't, so it could read the comet's chemical smell, like a nose. They found methane — the same stuff that makes natural gas burn on a stove — bubbling out of the ice. But here's the funny part: there was a LOT more methane and carbon dioxide coming off this comet than what we see in our own solar system's comets."
"Oh!" Theo whispered. "So it's like… a recipe that was baked in a different kitchen?"
"Exactly right!" Pip's tail wiggled. "It carries the chemistry of another star with it, like a postcard from a faraway place."
He looked up at the stars. "Somewhere out there is the sun it was born around. We may never even know which one. But its little frozen child came to say hello."
He handed each kid a small jar of ice. "Now you try. Point it at a warm lamp. What comes off?"
