A brand-new eye in the sky sets off for the dark universe
The News: On Sunday morning, NASA's brand-new Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope roared off the launch pad on a Falcon Heavy rocket. It's a bus-sized telescope beginning a three-month, one-million-mile trip to its parking spot in deep space, where it will hunt for planets around other stars, map billions of galaxies, and try to spot invisible stuff called dark matter.

Professor Pip patted his bulging green pockets and pulled out two crinkled cardboard tubes — one skinny like a drinking straw, the other fat like a paper-towel roll.

"Ah! Just the thing," he beamed, adjusting his crooked spectacles.

On the twilight hilltop above his little burrow, Mia and Leo sat cross-legged in the cool grass. Overhead, the first stars were blinking on.

"Today, my fellow scientists," Pip announced, tail swishing, "a brand-new telescope named Roman just blasted off into space! And I want you to see why everyone is so excited."

"A telescope in space?!" gasped Leo. "Why can't it just stay on the ground?"

"Curiouser and curiouser!" Pip chuckled. "Let's investigate. Peek through this skinny tube first."

Mia squinted through the straw-sized tube at the sky. "I only see, like… one star."

"Precisely! Now try the fat one."

She swapped tubes and gasped. "Oh! I see LOTS of them!"

"That," said Pip, "is called a field of view. It's how much sky an eye can see at once. Our old space telescope, Hubble, sees a beautiful patch of sky — but a very small one, like your skinny tube. This new Roman telescope's field of view is one hundred times wider. It's like the paper-towel roll."

Leo did the math on his fingers. "One hundred times more sky?!"

"One hundred times more sky, one hundred times more stars, one hundred times more places where a planet might be hiding," Pip nodded. "Which means Roman will find thousands of new planets around other stars, and take pictures of billions of galaxies."

He looked up. "But here's the mysterious part. Most of the universe is made of something we can't see — we call it dark matter and dark energy. We only know it's there because it tugs on things. Roman is going to look at how galaxies are pulled around, so we can finally start to understand what all that invisible stuff is."

"Like a detective!" said Mia.

"Exactly right." Pip tucked his tubes back into his pocket and passed each child a fresh cardboard roll. "Now — you try. Point your paper-towel telescope somewhere new every night for a week. See how much sky you can catch."

Above them, one particularly bright dot moved slowly across the stars. Somewhere out there, Roman was on its way.

The News: Scientists just published a stunning study of a 110-million-year-old armored dinosaur named Borealopelta, found in a mine in Alberta, Canada. What's amazing is that its skin, scales, armor plates, and even hints of its color are still preserved on its skeleton — something almost no other dinosaur fossil has ever shown.

Professor Pip knelt in a sunlit forest clearing, a tiny brush in one paw and a lumpy clay model of a dinosaur beside him. He'd painted it a soft reddish-brown, with rows of bumpy armor plates and long spikes coming off the shoulders.

"Oh my whiskers, look at this fellow," Pip whispered, dusting the model gently. "This is Borealopelta. He was about the size of a small car — twenty-nine hundred pounds of walking armor!"

Mia leaned in, mouth open. "He looks like a walking tank."

"Precisely!" Pip pushed his spectacles up his nose. "And here's the marvelous part. When scientists usually find a dinosaur, they find bones. The skin, the muscles, the color — all of it is long gone. But this one…" — he pointed to the clay flank — "…still has its skin. And its scales. And its armor. All in the right places, like a puzzle put together by nature."

"HOW?!" said Leo. "Nothing lasts a hundred and ten million years!"

Pip's tail swished with delight. "Ah! That's where I need my demonstration." He pulled a small mason jar from his coat pocket, tipped in some sand, and dropped a soft gummy candy on top. "Now, if I leave this candy sitting out…"

The three of them watched as a curious ant found the candy and started nibbling.

"…every critter and speck of mold in the forest wants a taste. But now watch." Pip carefully poured more sand right over the candy until it was completely buried. "Nothing can get to it anymore. No air, no bugs, no mold."

He looked up. "That's what happened to Borealopelta. After he died, he ended up floating in an ancient sea and sank to the bottom. Mud and sand covered him fast, before anything could nibble away the skin. That quick burial is called rapid burial, and it's the secret to a perfect fossil."

"Like tucking him into a blanket forever!" said Mia.

"Exactly right." Pip beamed. "And here's the surprise inside the surprise. Scientists found chemical clues that Borealopelta was darker on top and lighter underneath — a pattern called countershading. Lots of animals today, like deer and sharks, have it. It helps them blend in."

Leo frowned. "But he had ARMOR. Why would a walking tank need to hide?"

Pip's eyes twinkled. "That's the very question scientists are asking! It means the predators back then must have been so scary that even a tank wanted to be invisible."

The three of them looked at the clay dinosaur for a long, quiet moment.

"I wonder," Pip said softly, "what else the mud is still keeping safe for us."

The News: Deep in the South China Sea, researchers using an underwater submersible filmed a very strange, alien-looking fish called Scalicus engyceros. Instead of swimming, it walks across the seafloor on stiff, finger-like fin rays — sometimes sideways like a crab, and sometimes shuffling backward like a moonwalker. No other fish is known to do this!

Professor Pip crouched by the riverbank, his fluffy tail swishing behind him, magnifying glass pressed to a shallow glass tank. Inside the tank, something extremely peculiar was happening: a fish was walking.

"Curiouser and curiouser!" he whispered.

Mia and Leo scrambled over on their knees. "Fish don't walk!" Leo insisted.

"Ah, but SOME do," said Pip. "This little fellow is called an armored searobin. And down in the deep, dark ocean, scientists just filmed one of his cousins doing something no other fish on Earth is known to do."

"What?!" both children said at once.

Pip's spectacles slipped down his nose. He grinned. "He moonwalks. Backward. On the seafloor."

Leo burst out laughing. "That's not a real thing!"

"Precisely a real thing! Watch." Pip pointed. Inside the tank, the little searobin fanned out its front fins, then poked six stiff, finger-like rays into the sand. It scuttled sideways with a jerky step-step-step, exactly like a crab.

Mia's mouth dropped open. "It has FINGERS?!"

"They're called fin rays," said Pip, "and in this fish, they're extra thick and stiffened. Most fish use fins to swim. This one uses them to walk. Try it yourselves — hands and knees, everybody!"

The children flopped onto the grass, palms and knees down. "Now shuffle sideways… good! Now try going backward."

Leo shuffled backward and immediately toppled over, giggling. "It's HARD!"

"Exactly!" beamed Pip. "It's hard for us because our bodies weren't built for it. But this fish's body was. His two big pectoral fins fan out like little wings — that helps with balance. And he has fluffy branches on his snout that work like whiskers, so he can feel his way along in the pitch dark."

"So he can't really see down there?" asked Mia.

"Not much! It's over a thousand feet deep — no sunlight reaches that far. So instead of seeing his dinner, he feels for it. It's called adaptation — when a creature's body is shaped just right for a really tough neighborhood."

He looked out at the shining river. "You know, humans have explored more of outer space than we have of our own deep ocean. Every time a submersible goes down, we find creatures we never even imagined."

Then he handed each child a smooth pebble. "Now you try. Set your pebble on the ground and imagine you are a searobin. Which of your bones would need to change to walk on fingers instead of feet?"
