A Wobbly Space Peanut Tumbles Through the Stars
The News: NASA's Lucy spacecraft just shared what it learned when it zoomed past a tiny asteroid named Donaldjohanson last year. The asteroid turned out to be shaped like a peanut — two rounded lobes stuck together — and it doesn't spin smoothly. It wobbles through space like a tumbling top.

Professor Pip adjusted his slightly crooked spectacles and patted the bulging pockets of his forest-green lab coat. "Ah! Just what I need," he said, pulling out a lump of grey clay shaped like a peanut and a smooth round marble. His tiny brass telescope sat ready on the little picnic table.

The hilltop was turning purple-blue, and the first stars had begun to peek out. Mia, Leo, and Asha sat cross-legged on the grass, their faces glowing in the lantern light.

"Today," Professor Pip announced, his fluffy tail swishing behind him, "a spaceship called Lucy zoomed past a tiny asteroid the size of a small city — and it didn't behave like our scientists expected!"

"What did it do?" gasped Asha.
"Did it dance?" asked Mia.
"Better than dance," Pip whispered. "It wobbled. Watch."

He set the smooth marble on the table and gave it a flick. It spun cleanly, round and round, like a little planet. The children nodded — that made sense.

Then Pip set down the lumpy clay peanut and flicked that one. WOBBLE. WOBBLE. TIP! The peanut tumbled end-over-end, spinning one way AND tipping side-to-side at the same time, then plopped off the table into Leo's lap. The children burst into giggles.

"Why did the peanut go all twisty?!" laughed Leo.

"Precisely the right question!" said Pip. "When something is lumpy and lopsided, it can't spin smoothly. It spins around two directions at the same time. Scientists call that a non-principal axis rotation — but you can just call it tumbling."

He held up the clay peanut. "Lucy's asteroid is called Donaldjohanson. It's only about five miles wide — smaller than your town! It's shaped like THIS peanut because, long ago, two big rocks crashed gently together in space and stuck. And it spins one way every 10 and a half days, while wobbling sideways every 26 and a half days. A tumbling little world!"

"Oh!" cried Mia, eyes huge. "Like when I spin a Halloween pumpkin with a heavy stem — it tips sideways!"

"Exactly right, Mia!" Pip beamed, his spectacles slipping further down his nose. "Lucy even found that this little asteroid once held tiny drops of liquid water, more than a hundred million years ago. A wobbling peanut with a watery past."

Pip looked up at the deepening sky. Somewhere up there, a tiny tumbling peanut was turning end-over-end at this very moment.

"Now you try," he said, handing each child a real peanut in its shell. "Spin them. See how no two wobbles look the same."

The tiny dinosaur was only about two years old when it died about 100 million years ago. It may have been fuzzy. And we know exactly what it ate.

Professor Pip pushed his crooked spectacles up his nose and patted his pockets, sending up a small puff of garden dust. "Ah! There you are," he said, fishing out a soft fossil brush and his trusty magnifying glass.

In the sun-dappled corner of his garden, he had set up a small mock fossil dig — sandy dirt with a tiny skeleton model peeking out. Mia and Theo knelt beside him, brushes ready.

"Today," Pip announced, his tail swishing with delight, "we're talking about a baby dinosaur the size of a lamb — found in Korea — and it's been given the name Doolysaurus, after a famous cartoon character!"

"A dinosaur named after a cartoon?!" Theo nearly fell backward.
"How can scientists tell what a baby dinosaur looked like from just bones?" asked Mia.

"Aha! Watch this," Pip said. He brushed away the sandy dirt with tiny strokes — swish, swish, swish — uncovering the little duck-billed skeleton bit by bit. Then he held up his magnifying glass and a small folded sheet of tracing paper. He shone the lantern through the paper, and suddenly every bone behind it was visible — even the ones hidden underneath.

"Whoa!" gasped Theo.

"That trick," Pip said, "is like a micro-CT scan — a special kind of X-ray scientists use to peek INSIDE a rock without breaking it open. It's how the team in Korea found this tiny dinosaur's skull bones, hidden inside the stone. They got to see its face for the first time in 100 million years."

Pip's whiskers twitched with excitement. "And here's the most wonderful part. Doolysaurus was a baby — only about two years old. Not much bigger than a lamb. Scientists think it might have been covered in soft, fluffy down — like a baby duck or a baby chick! And inside its tummy, they found tiny smooth stones."

"Stones in its tummy?" Mia wrinkled her nose. "Why?!"

"Those are gastroliths," Pip said. "Stomach stones. The little dinosaur swallowed them on purpose, to help grind up plants and bugs in its belly — because it didn't have teeth to chew with."

"Oh!" Theo cried. "Like the rocks in our chicken Henrietta's gizzard!"

"Precisely!" Pip's eyes sparkled. "Modern chickens do the very same thing. Doolysaurus and Henrietta are not so different after all."

Pip looked at the small skeleton in the dirt and thought about all the baby dinosaurs that had once run through ancient ferns, fuzzy and curious, exploring the world.

"Now you try," he said, handing each child a tiny brush and a fresh patch of sand. "Be gentle. Who knows what tiny thing is hiding underneath?"

Professor Pip stood in his cozy wood-paneled lab, beside a tall round aquarium tank lit from above by a single beam of light. The water in the tank looked dark and mysterious, like the deepest part of the ocean.

He patted his lab coat pockets, gave a little hop of excitement, and pulled out a small wooden shark toy with a long pointy pink snout. It had a curious little hinge along the bottom of its jaw.

Mia and Jun pressed their noses right against the aquarium glass. "What lives in there, Professor?" Jun whispered.

"Today, my friends," Pip said, his tail swishing, "we are meeting the most mysterious shark in the entire ocean. The goblin shark. It lives so deep that no one — NO ONE — had ever seen one alive in its home until now!"

"Why not?" asked Mia, her eyes huge.

"Because the goblin shark lives down here," Pip said, pointing to the very bottom of the dim tank, "in waters more than two thousand meters deep. That's about two MILES below the surface. It's so dark and so far down that to see one, you have to send a robot."

"A robot SHARK?" cried Jun.

"A robot submarine," Pip said, his eyes sparkling. "Scientists call them ROVs — Remotely Operated Vehicles. The crew drives them from a ship on the surface, using long cables, like the world's longest video game controller. And THIS is what their robot saw."

He held up the little wooden shark. "Watch what its jaw does." He squeezed a tiny lever on the toy's belly. SHOOM! The jaw snapped FORWARD, way out past the snout, then snapped right back. The children jumped.

"DID YOU SEE THAT?!" Mia shrieked.

"That," Pip said, "is called a protrusible jaw. It means the jaw can ZOOM out and back like a slingshot. The real goblin shark's jaw flies forward at three meters every second — faster than YOU can run! It catches little fish before they even know it's there."

"Oh!" cried Jun. "Like a frog's tongue catching a fly — but a SHARK!"

"Exactly right!" Pip beamed. "Scientists call it 'slingshot feeding.' The team saw goblin sharks near Jarvis Island in 2019 and again deep in the Tonga Trench in 2024. Both spots are way out in the Pacific Ocean. We thought goblin sharks only lived in a few places. Now we know they swim across a HUGE part of the ocean we'd never imagined."

Pip looked into the dark tank. Somewhere — right now — a real goblin shark was gliding through the deep, slinging that wondrous jaw, doing what it has done for millions of years, all on its own.

"Now I wonder," Pip said softly, "what OTHER deep-sea creatures might still be down there, in the dark, waiting for someone to come find them?"
