Twelve-Thousand-Year-Old Dice Show How Long Kids Have Been Playing
The News: Archaeologists just announced that small polished bone game pieces found in western North America are about 12,000 years old — making them the oldest known dice in the world, thousands of years older than dice from ancient Egypt or Mesopotamia. People have been playing games of chance for an astonishingly long time.
A Story from Professor Pip's Science Discovery

Professor Pip adjusted his slightly crooked spectacles and patted the bulging pockets of his green lab coat. "Ah! Here we are," he said, pulling out a small carved bone die and his magnifying glass. He set the die gently on a soft cream cloth spread across the warm riverbank.

Mia and Leo crouched in close, mouths open with curiosity.

"Today," said Professor Pip, his fluffy tail swishing behind him, "we're going to be detectives. Time-traveling detectives!"

"What's the mystery?" asked Mia.

"This little fellow." Pip held up the die. "Some scientists just announced something amazing. They found tiny carved pieces just like this in the dirt — and they're TWELVE THOUSAND YEARS OLD."

"Twelve thousand?!" Leo gasped. "That's older than… everything!"

"Older than the pyramids," Pip nodded happily. "Older than written stories. Older than reading. So here's our mystery: how do scientists know these were dice for playing games — and not just polished pebbles?"

He picked up the die and let it tumble. Tap-tap-PLOP. It rolled, settled. He rolled again. Tap-PLOP. And again. Tap-tap-PLOP. Each time, a different side faced up.

"Why does it keep changing?" Mia asked.

"Exactly the right question!" Pip beamed. "Because every side has the same chance of landing on top. That's called probability — a fancy word for 'all the different ways something might happen.' If something is even on every side, you can't predict it. That's what makes games of chance fun."

Pip held up his magnifying glass. "Now, scientists looked at the ancient ones VERY closely, like this. And they saw the sides were worn smooth in just the same way — like they had been rolled, and rolled, and rolled."

"By kids!" said Leo, eyes wide.

"Probably!" Pip's whiskers twitched with delight. "Twelve thousand years ago, somebody — maybe a child just like you, sitting beside a fire — picked up these little bones and played a game."

For a moment everyone was quiet. The river burbled. The willows rustled. Twelve thousand years of children, all the way down to here.

"Curiouser and curiouser," whispered Pip. Then he tossed a tiny smooth pebble into Mia's hand and one into Leo's. "Mark a side. Roll them. See what stories your dice tell."

The News: When caterpillars start munching on bean plant leaves, scientists report the plants do something remarkable — they release tiny chemicals into the air that wasps can smell from far away. The wasps zoom in and hunt the caterpillars, and the plant keeps growing. It's a real-life cry for help, and bean plants aren't the only ones who do it.
A Story from Professor Pip's Science Discovery

Professor Pip stood among tall climbing bean plants, his green lab coat brushing the leaves and his bushy tail swishing through the warm garden air. He patted his pockets and pulled out his magnifying glass.

"Oh my whiskers," he murmured, holding the glass close to a bright green leaf. "Just as I thought."

Mia, Leo, and their friend Asha squeezed in beside him.

"What is it?" Asha asked.

Pip pointed to a few neat round holes nibbled in the leaf. "Caterpillar work. Tiny green sneaks have been having a feast." He looked up with a sparkle in his eye. "But here's the wonderful part — the bean plant isn't just sitting there. It's calling for help."

"Calling?" Leo squinted at the leaf. "Plants can't call. They don't have mouths."

"True," Pip nodded. "But they have smells. Watch."

He pulled a tiny bottle from his pocket and dabbed a drop of something on a flat stone. "Stand right over there, all three of you. Yes — by the gate."

The kids ran over. After a few seconds, Mia giggled. "It smells like oranges! From all the way over here!"

"PRECISELY!" Pip clapped his paws. "That smell traveled through the air, found your noses, and told you a story — something orange-y is over there. Plants do the same thing. When a caterpillar starts munching, the bean plant pushes out a special invisible mist of chemicals. Scientists call them volatiles — tiny smells that float."

Just then a small striped wasp buzzed past Pip's ear and landed on the chewed leaf.

"OH!" gasped Mia.

"And THAT," whispered Pip, "is who the plant was calling. Wasps love eating caterpillars. The plant's smell is like a dinner bell that only wasps can read."

"Like when Mom shakes the popcorn bag and the dog comes running!" Leo said.

"Exactly right!" Pip wiggled with delight, his spectacles slipping. "The plant gets rid of the caterpillar. The wasp gets a meal. The plant gets to keep growing leaves and beans. Everybody wins — except the caterpillar."

He looked out over the garden, where bumblebees hummed and bean tendrils curled toward the sun.

"All this whispering and signaling," he said softly, "going on right under our noses, every single day. The garden is talking. We just don't speak its language yet."

Then he tucked his magnifying glass away and handed each child a leaf. "Smell it. Crush a corner. What does it tell you?"

Venus and Jupiter Are About to Look Like They're Hugging
The News: On the night of June 9 , two of the brightest "stars" in the western sky won't be stars at all — they'll be the planets Venus and Jupiter , and they'll look like they're almost touching. NASA says it's one of the prettiest sky shows of the summer, and you don't need a telescope to see it. (A few days later, June 11–15, tiny Mercury sneaks in to join them — a real planet parade.)

The sky was deep blue and the stars were just blinking on, one by one. Professor Pip stood at the top of a soft grassy hill, his fluffy ringed tail swishing in the warm summer air. He patted his pockets and pulled out — aha! — his small brass telescope.

"There you are, you beauties," he murmured, peering up.

Mia and Leo scrambled up beside him.

"What are we looking at, Professor Pip?" Mia asked.

"Look low — there, just above the horizon." Pip pointed with his paw. "See those two very bright dots? The big creamy one, and the slightly smaller bright-white one?"

"They're so close together!" Leo said.

"That," said Professor Pip, his whiskers twitching, "is Jupiter — the biggest planet in our whole solar system. And right beside it, the bright white one? That's Venus. On June ninth, they'll look like they're nearly touching."

"Touching?!" Mia gasped. "Will they bump into each other?"

"Oh, no no no." Pip chuckled. "Let me show you why they only look close." He pulled two pebbles from his pocket — one big, one small — and set them on the grass. "Pretend these are Venus and Jupiter." Then he walked far away, almost to the edge of the hill, and turned around.

"Now close one eye and look at the pebbles from here!"

The kids squinted. "They look like they're right next to each other!" Leo said.

"And yet?" Pip walked back and held the pebbles apart in his paws.

"They're way far apart!" said Mia.

"PRECISELY!" said Pip, clapping. "Venus and Jupiter are millions and millions of miles from each other. But from where Earth is sitting in space, our line of sight catches them in almost the same direction. So they only look close. Scientists call this lining-up a conjunction."

"Like when two of my dolls look like they're hugging from across the room, but they're really on different shelves!" Mia said.

"Curiouser and curiouser!" Pip beamed. "Exactly right!"

He looked up at the gentle dance above them. Somewhere out there, Jupiter — with all its swirling clouds and its dozens of moons — was sliding along its big slow orbit. And Venus was sliding along its smaller, faster one. And both were just doing what they always do.

"Tonight is just the beginning," Pip whispered. "On the eleventh, tiny Mercury joins them. A whole planet parade."

He handed Leo and Mia each a small star chart. "Now I wonder… what will you spot tomorrow?"
