Oh my whiskers, there! Professor Pip here — and today three brand-new discoveries wandered in through my lab door, each stranger than the last. A bug from long, long ago wearing far too many legs. Some polar friends helping scientists reach a place nobody can go. And a mysterious red pinprick in the sky that's both a star and a black hole. The News: Scientists just unwrapped a 324-million-year-old fossil from a shale bed in West Texas and found the strangest insect they've ever seen. It had six walking legs like a normal bug — but also eighteen extra little legs running down its belly, tipped with paddle shapes for swimming. They named it Chosha praecursor, and it's the missing link between water-bugs and land-bugs.

Professor Pip adjusted his slightly crooked spectacles and patted the bulging pockets of his forest-green lab coat. "Ah! Curiouser and curiouser," he murmured, sliding a small slab of gray rock onto the workbench.

Mia and Leo scrambled onto stools on either side.

"What is that thing?" whispered Leo, squinting at a squished imprint in the stone.

Pip held up his big brass magnifying glass. "That, my fellow scientists, is a bug that lived three hundred and twenty-four million years ago. And look here — one, two, three pairs of walking legs, just like a beetle." He tapped the rock gently. "But then… nine more pairs going all the way down its belly!"

Mia gasped. "That's twenty-four legs! Grasshoppers only have six!"

"Precisely!" Pip's tail swished. "So here's the puzzle. Every insect alive today — every ant, every ladybug, every butterfly — has six legs. Not twelve. Not twenty-four. So what happened to all the extra ones?"

He rummaged in a coat pocket and pulled out a toy centipede and a toy grasshopper. "Long ago, the bug great-great-great-grandparents lived in the water, like tiny shrimp. Lots of little paddling legs helped them swim. WHOOSH!" He wiggled the centipede through the air.

"But then some brave ones started splashing up onto muddy shorelines. And on land, those extra swimming legs weren't very useful anymore. So generation after generation… the babies with fewer belly-legs and stronger walking-legs did better."

"So the extra legs just… went away?" asked Leo.

"Slowly, over millions and millions of years," Pip said. "That's called adaptation — when a whole family of animals changes shape to fit a new home."

Mia's eyes lit up. "Oh! Like when we moved to the new house and packed away my baby stroller because I don't need it anymore!"

Pip beamed. "Exactly right! Except imagine your body slowly packing away the parts it doesn't need."

He looked out the lab window at a beetle trundling along the sill. "Every single bug you see out there," he said softly, "is a great-great-grandkid of a swimmer. They just left their paddles behind."

He passed each child a magnifying glass. "Now — go outside and find me a bug. Count its legs. And ask yourself: what did its ancestors leave behind, to become this?"

Narwhals are helping scientists visit a place no boat can go
The News: Off the east coast of Greenland, six narwhals (the 'unicorns of the sea' with long spiral tusks) wore little satellite devices strapped to their backs for three years. Every time they dove deep, the devices measured how warm and salty the water was — 2,060 dives in all. Their data showed warm Atlantic water is sneaking farther up into the Arctic than scientists thought, melting glaciers from below.

Professor Pip zipped up his fuzzy scarf and clambered onto a little wooden boat, his forest-green lab coat flapping in the polar wind. The fjord stretched out around him — icy blue water, snowy peaks, and pale chunks of ice bobbing like marshmallows.

"Brrrrrr! Oh my whiskers, it's cold," he said, his breath puffing.

Mia and Leo, bundled in coats and mittens, knelt beside him at the rail. "Where are we, Professor?" Leo asked.

"East Greenland!" Pip announced, pulling a tiny brass telescope from a pocket. "And today we have a very important question: how warm is the water way down deep?"

"Can't you just… put a thermometer in?" asked Mia.

"Ah, a fine idea!" said Pip. "Except the deep water here is nearly a mile down. And covered in ice. And full of icebergs that could crunch a boat like a cookie." He shivered dramatically. "So we need a helper who can dive deeper than any submarine and swim around ice we can't reach."

SPLOOSH! Right beside the boat, a long spiral tusk broke the surface, followed by a gray-and-white speckled head with dark, curious eyes.

"A narwhal!" Mia squealed.

"Precisely!" Pip beamed. "Narwhals are whales with a long spiraled tooth like a unicorn's horn. They live where we can't. And they dive a whole kilometer down, over and over, all winter long."

He held up a tiny gadget with a little antenna. "Scientists gently attached little sensors like this to six narwhal friends. Every time a narwhal dove, the sensor measured the temperature and saltiness of the water — and beamed the numbers up to a satellite in space."

"So the narwhals are… scientists?" Leo asked, grinning.

"They most certainly are. Two thousand and sixty dives! And they discovered something surprising: warm water from way down south is sneaking up under the ice, deeper than anyone knew."

He blew on his tea; the steam rose off it in curls. "See how the warm steam floats up? Cold water sinks and warm water rises — but salty water is heavy, so warm salty water can slip underneath cold fresh water. That's the sneaky part. It touches the glaciers from below and melts them."

Leo's mouth fell open. "Whoa. That's like ice cream melting from the bottom."

"Exactly right!" Pip laughed. "This is oceanography — the science of understanding how oceans work. And sometimes, the best way to understand a place is to ask the animals who already live there."

The narwhal blew a tiny mist from its blowhole and slid back into the deep. Pip tipped his hat.

"Thank you, friend."

The News: Astronomers using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope kept spotting mysterious 'little red dots' from the early universe and couldn't figure out what they were. This week, they announced the answer: at least one of them, called MoM-BH*-1, is a brand-new kind of object — a giant black hole wrapped in a huge cloud of gas so hot it shines like a star. They named it a black hole star.

Night had fallen on the hilltop. Professor Pip fumbled in his lab-coat pockets and pulled out a small brass telescope, a plaid blanket, and — after a moment of searching — a metal funnel and a jug of water.

"Look up, my fellow scientists," he whispered.

Mia and Leo tipped their heads back. The sky was a swirl of stars, and one — one strange pinprick near the horizon — glowed a deep, deep red.

"Is that a red star?" Leo asked.

"It looks like a star," Pip said, adjusting his crooked spectacles. "But astronomers just discovered it's actually a black hole wearing a star's coat. They call it a black hole star. Curiouser and curiouser!"

Mia frowned. "But black holes are dark. That's why they're called black. How can a black hole shine?"

"AH!" Pip clapped his paws. "Best question of the evening. Let me show you." He plopped the funnel over the mouth of the jug and picked up a small pebble.

"A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so hard that even light can't escape. It's like this funnel — anything that comes close spirals in and disappears."

He tipped water into the funnel. The water swirled — faster, faster — SLOSH-WHOOSH! — and vanished down the neck of the jug.

"See how the water spins around the outside before it falls in? That's called an accretion disk," Pip said, sounding out the word slowly. "Gas and dust circle a black hole the same way. And because everything is squished and spinning so fast, it gets incredibly hot — hotter than a hundred suns."

"Hot things glow!" Mia exclaimed.

"Precisely!" Pip's tail swished happily. "The black hole itself is invisible. But the gas swirling around it gets so hot it glows brighter than a whole galaxy. From very far away, that glow looks like… a star."

Leo stared at the red dot. "So it's like a lightbulb, but the bulb part is invisible and only the glow shows?"

"Exactly right!" Pip beamed. "And here's the truly astonishing part. That light has been traveling for billions of years to reach your eyes tonight. When it left, dinosaurs didn't exist yet. Earth didn't exist yet."

They all sat quietly for a moment, looking up.

"So many of those little dots up there," Pip said softly, "might not be stars at all. They might be black holes wearing disguises. Now I wonder… how many more are hiding?"
