The News: Scientists at Cornell University just announced that a quiet New York cemetery — East Lawn in Ithaca — has roughly 5.5 million ground-nesting bees living right under the grass. That's about as many bees as 200 honeybee hives, all packed into a patch the size of a baseball field. The species is called the regular mining bee, and it's been quietly living there since the early 1900s. Nobody knew until a sharp-eyed lab worker spotted them on a walk.

Professor Pip adjusted his slightly crooked spectacles and patted the bulging pockets of his green lab coat. "Aha! Just what we need," he said, pulling out his big brass magnifying glass.

He was kneeling in a sunny meadow with Mia and Leo, the spring grass tickling his tail. He pointed at a small patch of bare dirt near a tree root.

"Look very, very closely," he whispered. "Tell me what you see."

Mia leaned in. "There are… holes. Tiny holes. Like polka dots in the dirt!"

"Precisely!" said Pip, his tail swishing. "And each one belongs to one bee. Just one. She digs the hole herself, all the way down with her little legs. Inside, she makes a cozy room, lays an egg, and tucks in a pillow of pollen for the baby to eat when it hatches. Then off she goes."

"Wait — they don't live in a hive?" asked Leo.

"Not these ones. Honeybees live in big groups, sharing one home. But most of the world's bees — and there are more than 20,000 kinds! — are solitary. That means they live alone. Each mama bee, her own little burrow."

A bee zipped past with a quiet BZZ! Pip held up his magnifying glass so the children could see. She was small and golden, with stripes the color of toasted bread, her legs dusty with pollen.

"In a cemetery in New York," Pip continued, "scientists just found a place where five-and-a-half MILLION of these little mining bees all live in the same field. Each one in her own burrow. Five and a half million tiny front doors!"

"That's a whole bee CITY!" gasped Mia. "But… invisible! Like an underground neighborhood!"

"Exactly right!" Pip beamed. "And here is the wonderful part. The bees were there for over a hundred years, working away under everyone's feet. Pollinating the apple trees, the dandelions, the flowers. Quiet helpers, hidden in plain sight."

He sat back, looking out at the meadow. "It makes me wonder, doesn't it, what other tiny worlds are right under our boots that we just haven't looked at yet."

He pulled a small notebook from his pocket and handed it to Leo. "Tomorrow morning, before breakfast — go outside. Find a patch of bare dirt and count the little holes. You might be a neighbor to bees and not even know it."

The News: A spacecraft called Psyche just whipped past Mars at about 12,000 miles per hour , coming within 2,900 miles of the Red Planet — closer to Mars than New York is to Los Angeles. But it wasn't a visit. NASA was using Mars's gravity to fling Psyche faster and faster toward its real destination: a strange metal-rich asteroid in the asteroid belt. The trick gave the spacecraft a boost of about 1,000 mph — for free.

Professor Pip stood on a grassy hilltop, the afternoon sun glowing golden behind him. From his green coat pocket, he pulled out a small rubber ball tied to a long string.

"Today, my young scientists," he announced, his tail swishing in the breeze, "we are going to learn a trick that NASA just used to send a spaceship racing through outer space — without using any extra fuel."

"No fuel?!" said Asha, shielding her eyes from the sun.

"None! Watch closely." Pip held the string and began to twirl the ball above his head in a wide circle. Faster. Faster. The ball whooshed around so quickly that Leo's hat almost blew off.

"Now — what's keeping the ball from flying away?" Pip asked.

"The string!" all three kids shouted.

"Precisely! The string keeps tugging it back toward me. But here is the magic." Pip suddenly let go. WHOOSH! The ball zoomed off in a long arc across the meadow, much faster than he could have thrown it. "When I let go, the ball used all the speed I had built up — and shot away."

"That's how a sling works!" said Mia.

"Right again! In space, planets do the same thing — but with their gravity instead of a string." Pip pointed at the sky. "A NASA spaceship called Psyche flew very close to Mars. Mars is huge and zooming around the Sun. As Psyche swung past, Mars's gravity grabbed it like an invisible string, swung it around, and then — let it go in a new direction, going much faster."

"So Mars is like a really really big invisible sling?" asked Leo, eyes wide.

"Exactly right!" Pip beamed. "Scientists call it a gravity assist, or sometimes a slingshot maneuver. The spaceship steals a tiny bit of Mars's motion around the Sun, and Mars doesn't even notice. Psyche got a thousand miles-per-hour boost — completely free. No fuel burned."

"Where is it going?" asked Asha.

"To an asteroid that might be made almost entirely of metal — like the bones of a baby planet that never grew up. But the asteroid is so far away that we needed Mars's help just to get there in time."

Pip looked up at the dusky sky, where a faint sliver of moon was rising. "Somewhere up there, right now, that little spaceship is sailing along — carrying a piece of Mars's motion with it. Quietly. Steadily. For three more years, until it arrives."

He handed the string and ball to Mia. "Now you try. See how fast you can get it going — and notice, when you let go, which way it flies."

On lonely Scottish islands, tiny birds are growing into giants
The News: Scientists studying tiny brown birds called wrens on four remote Scottish islands — Shetland, Fair Isle, the Outer Hebrides, and especially St Kilda — just discovered something amazing. The island wrens are growing twice as big as the wrens on the mainland. A mainland wren weighs about as much as two coins. A St Kilda wren weighs as much as four. And scientists think they might be slowly becoming brand-new species, right in front of us.

The wind whipped across the cliff, tugging at Professor Pip's lab coat. His ringed tail flapped behind him like a striped flag. He held out two small clay birds in his paws — one tiny, one quite a bit bigger.

"Look at these two friends," he said. "Both wrens. Both the same kind of bird — well, almost. But this one —" he held up the small one "— lives in a forest on the mainland. And this one —" he lifted the bigger one "— lives way out on a windy island in the sea. Same family. Different sizes."

"Why is the island one so much chubbier?" asked Mia, pulling her knit cap down tighter against the breeze.

"Curiouser and curiouser!" Pip said. "That is exactly what scientists wanted to know. Let me show you." He set the clay birds on a flat rock and pulled out his pocket notebook.

"Imagine a mainland forest. Lots of trees. Lots of food. But ALSO — lots of foxes. Lots of hawks. Lots of bigger birds bullying you off the best worms. If you are a wren, what do you want to be?"

"Small!" said Leo. "So nobody sees you!"

"Precisely. Tiny and sneaky." Pip's tail swished. "Now — picture a faraway island. Just rocks and grass and waves. No foxes. No big bully birds. But the wind is FIERCE and the winters are COLD. If you are a wren now, what do you want to be?"

Mia thought hard. "Bigger? So the wind doesn't blow you away?"

"And so you stay warm!" added Leo.

"Exactly right!" Pip beamed. "Bigger bodies hold heat better. Bigger birds can hold their ground in a storm. And nobody is going to eat them, so why stay small? Over thousands of years, the wrens that happened to be just a little bigger had more babies. And those babies were a little bigger. And THEIR babies, bigger still."

"That's evolution!" said Mia, eyes wide.

"That's evolution," Pip nodded. "And when it happens on islands like this, there's a special name for it: island gigantism. Tiny creatures grow into giants because the island lets them. The St Kilda wrens are now twice the size of their mainland cousins. Their songs sound different. Their feathers look a little different. Scientists think — quietly, slowly — they are turning into a brand-new species."

"A new kind of bird?" Leo whispered. "Like, we're watching it happen?"

"Right before our eyes," Pip said softly, looking out at the wild sea. "Evolution isn't only something that happened to dinosaurs millions of years ago. It is happening right now. On these very cliffs. To these very birds."

He tucked his notebook away. "Now — listen. Can you hear the wrens singing in the heather? Listen very carefully. You are hearing the song of a brand-new kind of bird, before it even has a name."
